Ode to ScoliosisThere's a difference between you and I
Your spine is straight
Mine is crooked
Your hips are even
Mine are not
At first I thought I was special
Unique, and unlike the others
In a way, this was true
Although it was
Not in the way I'd like it to be.
"You have Scoliosis," He told me
"It's a 37 degree curve." He said.
I looked at the x-ray
My spine looked like an S
It was sickening
It intrigued me
Did my spine really look like that?
Under this flesh and muscle?
"If it gets worse," He said
"You will have to wear a brace." He warned
I thought I wouldn't mind
I thought I would be fascinating, unique even
I thought, why not?
It will only help me
Kids will think I'm interesting
I will be admired
But this was not the case.
X-ray after x-ray, the condition only worsened
Until the point
Where the brace was mandatory
It restricts my movements
It makes sitting too long unbearable
It makes it a task to run
And I feel bulky
Oh so bulky
It looks awkward
Sempre gostei de observar os desenhos de gente mundo a fora e decidi aprender a desenhar, eu sei que tenho muito para aprender.
I always loved seeing the art that people could do, so I decided to learn to draw, I know that I have much to learn still.
